In June 2012, Lambeth Council resolved to grant planning permission for Sainsbury’s Nine Elms to be transformed into an exciting new development featuring a new Sainsbury’s supermarket, new homes including affordable housing, retail and commercial units.
Sainsbury’s has had a store on this site for almost thirty years. Since it was first built, we’ve extended the store twice and it is one of our most popular stores in South London.
We want to give you a better shopping experience by increasing the range of products available as well as building space for other shops and businesses. The new development will have parking on the ground floor and in a newly created basement and will also provide residential properties above the store.
This site has been identified by both Lambeth Council and the Greater London Authority as somewhere that is suitable for “intensification”. This has been crucial in our thinking and has influenced our thoughts behind the plans.
Our store also sits at the entrance to the Vauxhall, Nine Elms and Battersea Opportunity Area. This part of London has been identified for one of the biggest regeneration schemes in the country, with the potential for thousands of new homes and many more businesses. Our proposals will help bring the ambitious plans one step closer. However, we also see this development as being able to stand apart from the wider regeneration proposals and we have been in close discussion with the neighbouring landowners to ensure that our ideas are compatible with theirs.
Northern Line Extension
We are working with Lambeth Council, Transport for London (TfL) and other landowners in the area over the proposed extension of the Northern Line.
Part of our site, where our Petrol Filling Station is currently located, has been identified as the location for the proposed Nine Elms Station. As such we are unable to provide a Sainsbury’s petrol station as part of the temporary offer or our final plans for the site. However there is a petrol station a few hundred yards further down Wandsworth Road, towards Wandsworth, and also on Albert Embankment, to the east of Vauxhall Cross.
